8-Day Belize Birding and Culture Tour
An eight-day small-group journey through Belize combining wetland and rainforest birding with Maya sites, local food traditions and comfortable eco-lodges.
About this tour
This eight-day Belize journey pairs serious birding with cultural experiences across the country's northern wetlands and western forests. The route begins at Crooked Tree, where lagoon habitats support waterbirds and raptors, then follows the New River to Lamanai before continuing through the Belize Zoo area, San Ignacio and the forested valley around Black Rock Lodge.
Birding remains central throughout the trip. A boat excursion in Crooked Tree Wildlife Sanctuary offers opportunities for wetland species, while village walks, lodge grounds and forest trails broaden the search to toucans, motmots, trogons, honeycreepers, aracaris and raptors. The operator estimates that a week can produce close to 200 species, although every sighting depends on season and natural conditions.
The programme also makes room for Belize's history and living culture. Guests visit the Lamanai and Xunantunich archaeological sites, join a tortilla and tamale workshop, learn about cacao processing and explore a native butterfly conservation project. A night wildlife outing, sunset cruise and unhurried time at Black Rock Lodge add variety between the main birding sessions.
David Rupp hosts the tour, working with local guides at key sites. The published price is per person in double occupancy, with a single supplement. Meals, lodging, guides, tips and ground transportation are included; international flights and specified personal expenses are excluded.
