Andean Negrito

Lessonia oreas (Sclater, PL & Salvin, 1869)

Tyrannidae — Tyrant Flycatchers, Calyptura

Andean Negrito, Lessonia oreas, is a tyrant flycatcher of the Andes in South America, breeding from Peru to north-west Argentina. It lives in open grassy country with scattered low shrubs beside lakes, streams and bogs. The bird is a year-round resident, though some move downslope in the austral winter. It is mostly terrestrial, often using rocks or tussocks, and takes insects in short flights or from the ground. Males show a fluttering display flight, and the nest is a hidden grass cup lined with feathers, with three or four eggs.
