Bonin Petrel

Pterodroma hypoleuca (Salvin, 1888)

Bonin Petrel, Pterodroma hypoleuca, breeds in the Pacific Ocean on the Ogasawara Islands, the Iwo Islands and from Kure Atoll to French Frigate Shoals, and it ranges outside the breeding season to Honshu, Sakhalin and the Kuril Islands. It is a petrel in the Procellariidae family, first described by Salvin in 1888. The bird is a small gadfly petrel, and its breeding sites are split between Japan and the north-western Hawaiian Islands. Despite that wide span, it is tied to remote island colonies and has a limited range.
