Erect-crested Penguin

Eudyptes sclateri Buller, 1888

Erect-crested Penguin, Eudyptes sclateri, is a penguin of the New Zealand region that breeds on the Bounty Islands and the Antipodes Islands, and ranges to waters off the east of the South Island outside the breeding season. It was described by Buller in 1888. Its breeding sites are on rocky ground, where it gathers in large colonies. The bird is marked by black upperparts, white underparts, and a yellow stripe above the eye that rises into a short crest. Little else is known about its life history and breeding, and it is also recorded from the New Zealand mainland in the past.
