European Rock Pipit

European Rock Pipit, Anthus petrosus, is a passerine of the western European coast, breeding on rocky shorelines. It belongs to the Motacillidae family and was described by Montagu in 1798. The bird is a small pipit with streaked grey-brown upperparts and buff below, and it resembles other European pipits. Two subspecies are recognised. The nominate form stays in place, while the Fennoscandian form moves and spends winter farther west and south in Europe, in shoreline habitats. It is territorial in the breeding season, and also all year where it remains resident.
