Laughing Owl, Ninox albifacies, lived in New Zealand across the North, South and Stewart islands. It was an owl of the family Strigidae and is now extinct. The bird was once widespread enough to be plentiful when European settlers first arrived. It was first described by Gray in 1844. The species is known for its white-faced appearance, and it was formerly placed in other genera before being recognised in Ninox. Its recorded range also included forest districts in the North Island and low-rainfall parts of the South Island.
