Spotted Berrypecker

Rhamphocharis piperata (De Vis, 1898)

Spotted Berrypecker, Rhamphocharis piperata, is a bird of New Guinea’s subtropical or tropical moist montane forests. It was recognised as a separate species by the IOC in 2021 after having been treated as part of the thick-billed berrypecker. The name refers to the female’s spotted plumage. A molecular study published in 2021 also showed that it belonged within Melanocharis, and both it and the thick-billed berrypecker were moved out of Rhamphocharis on that basis.
