Yellow-billed Egret, Ardea brachyrhyncha, is a heron of Africa south of the Sahara. It breeds across sub-Saharan Africa, from southern Mauretania and Sudan down to the Western Cape in South Africa, and it also occurs in a range of wet places including seasonally flooded grassland, shallow lake margins, river edges, salt pans and estuaries. It is recognised by its smaller bill and by the gape that stops short of the eye. In breeding plumage it develops long plumes on the back and breast, and the bill changes from yellow to orange red.
