14-Day Ethiopia Birding Tour: The Land of Origins
A 14-day Ethiopian circuit from Addis Ababa and Debre Libanos to Awash, Lake Langano, the Bale Mountains, Yabello and Lake Hawassa.
About this tour
This 14-day route crosses Ethiopia from the central highlands to Rift Valley lakes, the Bale Mountains and the dry south. It begins around Addis Ababa, the Entoto Mountains and Gefersa Reservoir before moving north across the Sululta Plains to Debre Libanos, the Jemma Valley and the Ankober escarpment.
Awash National Park and the Ali Dege plains introduce acacia scrub and open-country birding. Two days around Lake Langano then add lakeshore and woodland species before the route climbs to Bale Mountains National Park. Dinsho, the Sanetti Plateau and Harenna Forest provide contrasting montane forest, moorland and bamboo habitats, as well as opportunities for endemic birds and mammals.
The southern stage travels through the Genale Valley and Negele Borena to Yabello Wildlife Sanctuary, with dedicated searches for Stresemann’s Bushcrow, White-tailed Swallow and other regional specialties. Lake Hawassa supplies the final wetland and woodland birding before the return to Addis Ababa. Accommodation follows the published sequence but equivalent properties may be used; all sightings, access and any night activity depend on current field conditions.
