Five-Day Ladakh Birding Tour: Leh and Tso Kar
Spend five days birding from Leh through the Indus Valley to Tso Kar and Tasabuk, with a gentle arrival day before reaching Ladakh’s high-altitude wetlands.
About this tour
This compact Ladakh itinerary gives birdwatchers time in both the Indus Valley and the wetlands around Tso Kar. It begins in Leh with an arrival and acclimatization day at about 3,500 metres. The following day explores birding areas near Shey, Thiksey, Chuchot, the Spituk marshes and Gupuks Lake near Phey.
The drive toward Tso Kar crosses a markedly different landscape. The operator allows around five to six hours for the approximately 170-kilometre journey, with opportunities to look for birds and other wildlife around Gya Meru, Rumtse, Taglang La and Debring. An afternoon walk introduces the lakeshore. The next morning returns to the lake before continuing to Tasabuk, described by the operator as a breeding area for many birds. The route then heads back to Leh for a final night before departure.
The itinerary uses a Leh hotel and a camp or hotel near Tso Kar. Listed services include airport transfers, meals, surface transport, applicable permits and field optics. The operator publishes per-person rates for one to four guests for 2026; exact dates and availability are confirmed through BirdWatch.
