Sao Tome Birding and Nature Tour - 10 Days with Ashanti African Tours

Arrive at Sao Tome international airport, meet the Ashanti African Tours guide and driver, transfer to the hotel and settle in. The evening includes a welcome dinner and time to prepare for the birding route.

Take a boat trip to Sao Miguel, then set off into the forest for Sao Tome Olive Pigeon, Sao Tome Paradise Flycatcher, Gulf of Guinea Thrush, Giant Weaver, Sao Tome Green Pigeon, Lemon Dove, Principe or Sao Tome Seedeater, Principe White-eye, Sao Tome Speirops, Sao Tome Prinia, Sao Tome Weaver and other birds before returning to the hotel.

Fly to Principe for the next two nights. After arrival and transfer to accommodation, spend the afternoon birding the hotel grounds and nearby habitats for the first Principe endemics.

After morning birding around Principe accommodation, travel by boat to the south of the island and Praia Peixe. Walk to a basic camp in pristine forest and volcanic landscapes, with the evening dedicated to looking for Principe Scops Owl.

Bird the walk back from Praia Peixe and surrounding habitats, with Principe Thrush and Dohrn's Thrush-Babbler among the possibilities. Return by boat, then use the afternoon for further endemic birding around Principe habitats and accommodation grounds.

Bird the hotel road before breakfast, fly back to Sao Tome, then spend the afternoon in Obo National Park, Bom Sucesso Botanical Gardens and farm-bush habitats. Targets include Sao Tome Scops Owl, Sao Tome Paradise Flycatcher, Sao Tome Oriole, Sao Tome Speirops, Newton's Sunbird, Gulf of Guinea Thrush, Sao Tome Spinetail and Sao Tome Seedeater.

Head south toward Monte Carvo forest, with possible stops around Rio Grande for Sao Tome Kingfisher, Giant Sunbird and waterbirds. Continue toward Ribeira Peixe and forest access, with either basic camping or return-to-town logistics depending on the selected version of the itinerary.

Start early for a full morning and early afternoon in Monte Carvo. Main targets include Sao Tome Olive Ibis, Sao Tome Short-tail, Giant Sunbird, Sao Tome Grosbeak and Newton's Fiscal, with Sao Tome Weaver, Sao Tome Oriole, Sao Tome Paradise Flycatcher, Newton's Sunbird, Sao Tome Scops Owl and other endemics also possible. Return to Sao Tome for the evening.

Bird the northern beaches, an area of savannah, grassland and woodland, for Harlequin Quail, Red-necked Francolin, Blue Waxbill, Whimbrel, White-winged Widowbird, Western Reef Heron, Sao Tome Prinia, Southern Masked Weaver, Common Sandpiper, White-tailed Tropicbird, Sao Tome Weaver, Common Waxbill and other open-country species. The afternoon is flexible for rest, local visits or additional birding.

After a relaxed breakfast, bird habitats closer to the airport for better views of species already seen. Return to freshen up, take lunch, rearrange bags and transfer to the airport for departure.
