A love of birds. A reason to explore.
BirdWatch grew from founder Marko Ratić's personal interest in birds and the natural world. Birds, aquariums and plants have long been part of his life, alongside projects that brought people together through a shared love of nature and travel.
Marko's friendship with ornithologist Dr Marko Raković brought a new dimension to his interest in birds: discovering them in their natural habitats. Their shared enthusiasm for birds and nature became the inspiration for BirdWatch.
Today, BirdWatch helps others explore that same curiosity. It brings together birds, destinations and independent local guides, making it easier to discover a birding trip and learn what an experience offers before setting out.
Marko Ratić
Founder · MSc in Electrical Engineering
Marko is a bird enthusiast and nature lover based in Belgrade, Serbia. He has kept and bred exotic birds for more than 15 years, with a hands-on interest in their care and behaviour.
His enthusiasm for the natural world extends to aquarium keeping and growing plants. These long-standing interests are a personal part of the story behind BirdWatch.
Through BirdWatch, he brings that enthusiasm to a wider community, helping people discover birds in their natural habitats and find local guides to explore with.
Dr Marko Raković
Ornithologist · PhD in Ecological Sciences
Marko Raković is a researcher at the Institute for Multidisciplinary Research, University of Belgrade. His research interests include ornithology, ecology, taxonomy and the geographical distribution of birds.
He earned his doctorate at the University of Belgrade's Faculty of Biology in 2019 and previously worked as an ornithology curator at the Natural History Museum in Belgrade.
His friendship with BirdWatch's founder and their shared enthusiasm for birds helped inspire the idea for the platform.
