Haematopus moquini
The African Black Oystercatcher (Haematopus moquini) is a striking shorebird found along the rocky coastlines of southern Africa. With its distinctive black plumage, bright red bill, and pink legs, this medium-sized oystercatcher is well-adapted to its coastal habitat. These birds are often seen foraging for mollusks and other invertebrates in the intertidal zones, using their strong bills to pry open shells. African Black Oystercatchers are monogamous and form long-term pair bonds, often returning to the same breeding sites year after year. While their populations are currently stable, they face threats from human disturbance, habitat loss, and pollution.
