African Black Swift

Apus barbatus

The African Black Swift (Apus barbatus) is a medium-sized swift found in sub-Saharan Africa. It is known for its distinctive black plumage and long, scythe-shaped wings. These swifts are highly aerial, spending most of their lives in flight, only landing to nest in rocky crevices or caves. They are often seen foraging for insects over open water, grasslands, and forests. African Black Swifts are highly social birds, often seen in large flocks during the breeding season. They are known for their high-pitched, chattering calls and impressive aerial acrobatics.
