African Chaffinch

Fringilla spodiogenys Bonaparte, 1841

African Chaffinch, Fringilla spodiogenys, is a finch of northern Africa, breeding across the Palearctic in that region. It occurs from southern Morocco to north-western Libya, with populations on Lampedusa and Pantelleria in Italy, and an isolated group in north-eastern Libya. Bonaparte described it in 1841. It was once treated as two African forms of the Common Chaffinch. Its breeding places include deciduous woodland and lowland areas, and outside the breeding season it also uses open ground, weedy fields and olive groves.
