African Darter

Microcarbo africanus

The African Darter is a slender, long-necked waterbird found in sub-Saharan Africa. It has a distinctive slender, sharply pointed bill and a long, snake-like neck. This species is well adapted for underwater foraging, using its sharp bill to catch fish and other aquatic prey. African Darters are often seen perched on branches overhanging water, from which they plunge to catch their prey. They are skilled swimmers and have waterproof feathers that allow them to dive and stay submerged for extended periods. Breeding colonies are typically found in trees near water bodies. The African Darter is a fascinating and specialized bird that is well adapted to its aquatic lifestyle.
