African Grass Owl

Tyto capensis (Smith, A, 1834)

African Grass Owl, Tyto capensis, is a barn owl relative found across sub-Saharan Africa from Ethiopia and Cameroon south to South Africa. It is a species of owl in the family Tytonidae, first described by Smith in 1834. It is closely associated with moist grassland and open savanna, and in southern Africa it is especially linked with marshes and vleis that hold tall grass and other cover. The species is also recorded from dry grassland in parts of east Africa, and from a range of other habitats near water in the south.
