African Harrier-Hawk
Polyboroides radiatus
The African Harrier-Hawk, also known as the Gymnogene, is a medium-sized raptor found in sub-Saharan Africa. It is easily recognized by its distinctive double-jointed legs, which allow it to maneuver through dense woodland and forests with agility. This bird of prey has a predominantly grey plumage with striking white and black markings, and a distinctive facial disk. It is an opportunistic hunter, feeding on a variety of prey including small mammals, birds, and insects. The African Harrier-Hawk is often observed soaring and gliding over its woodland habitat, using its keen eyesight to locate potential prey. Despite being relatively common in its range, habitat loss and persecution pose threats to its populations.
