African Hoopoe

Upupa africana

African Hoopoe, Upupa africana, is a hoopoe found in Africa. It has sometimes been treated as a species in its own right rather than as part of the Eurasian hoopoe group. It is one of the most distinctive forms, with a long, narrow bill that curves downwards, a tall crest that can be raised, and black and white wings. The tail shows a broad white band across black. Its call is a soft oop-oop-oop. It is native across Africa, and the African populations stay in place throughout the year.
