African Piculet

Verreauxia africana (Verreaux, J & Verreaux, É, 1855)

African Piculet, Verreauxia africana, is a woodpecker from Africa, breeding from Sierra Leone to Ghana and east through Cameroon to Uganda, with further populations in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and northern Angola. It is the only member of Verreauxia. The species was first described in 1855 by Jules and Édouard Verreaux. It is a small bird of lowland secondary forest, where it uses the lower layers of trees, bushes and thick growth. It is regarded as locally common and has a wide range.
