Hirundinidae — Swallows, Martins
African Red-rumped Swallow, Cecropis melanocrissus, is a passerine in the swallow family Hirundinidae and breeds across Africa. Its range runs through west Africa from Senegambia to west Cameroon and east Sudan, and through east Africa from Ethiopia and Eritrea to Malawi and north Zambia. It was described by Rüppell in 1845. The species was first named from a specimen taken in northern Ethiopia, and its scientific name combines terms meaning black and vent. Four subspecies are recognised, and one of them was once treated as the West African swallow.
