African Skimmer
Rynchops albicollis
The African Skimmer (Rynchops albicollis) is a unique bird known for its striking appearance and distinctive feeding behavior. With its long, slender wings and striking black and white plumage, this species is instantly recognizable. These birds are found along the waterways and inland rivers of sub-Saharan Africa, where they use their elongated lower mandible to skim the water's surface in search of fish. African Skimmers are highly social birds, often nesting in colonies on sandbanks or islands. Unfortunately, due to habitat loss and disturbance, their populations are declining, making them a species of conservation concern.
