Akohekohe

Palmeria dolei (Wilson, SB, 1891)

Fringillidae — Finches, Euphonias

Akohekohe, Palmeria dolei, is a Hawaiian finch found in the Hawaiian Islands, with breeding confined to Maui. It lives in wet forest on the windward slopes of Haleakalā and only nests at high elevations above 1,715 m. The bird is marked by a prominent pale crest, which makes it easy to pick out in the canopy. It feeds on nectar from ʻōhiʻa lehua flowers and also takes insects, fruit and nectar from other plants when needed. It is vulnerable to mosquito-borne avian malaria.
