Botaurus lentiginosus
The American Bittern is a medium-sized heron found in North America. It has a mottled brown and buff plumage that provides excellent camouflage in its marshland habitat. This elusive bird is known for its distinctive booming call, which is often heard during the breeding season. American Bitterns are solitary birds and are skilled at remaining hidden among the reeds and grasses where they hunt for fish, amphibians, and insects. Their conservation status is of Least Concern according to the IUCN, but they are vulnerable to habitat loss and degradation.
