American Bittern

Botaurus lentiginosus (Rackett, 1813)

American Bittern, Botaurus lentiginosus, is a heron in the family Ardeidae and is widespread across North America for breeding. In the nonbreeding season it occurs in Massachusetts and the Caribbean. It is a wading bird of marshes and the thick growth along the margins of lakes and ponds. The species is notably well hidden in its surroundings and usually lives alone. During the breeding period, the male is most easily detected by its loud booming call. It was described by Rackett in 1813.
