American Black Swift, Cypseloides niger, breeds in western North America and Middle America and spends the nonbreeding season in South America. It is a swift in the family Apodidae, first described by Gmelin in 1789. The bird is tied to breeding places near water, especially high cliff faces beside or above waterfalls, and it also nests above the ocean surf. Its nest is built from twigs and moss held together with mud, with ferns or seaweed used when available. It is a bird that stays on the wing while feeding, taking flying insects.
