American Coot

Fulica americana

The American Coot is a distinctive waterbird found in North America. It has a dark body, white bill, and prominent frontal shield. These birds are highly adaptable and can be found in a variety of wetland habitats, including lakes, ponds, marshes, and coastal estuaries. They are known for their loud calls and aggressive behavior during the breeding season. American Coots are omnivorous, feeding on aquatic plants, insects, and small fish. They are medium-sized birds, measuring about 36-42 cm in length. Their conservation status is of Least Concern according to the IUCN Red List.
