American Goldfinch

Carduelis citrinella

The American Goldfinch is a small, vibrant bird native to North America. During the breeding season, males display bright yellow plumage with black wings and a distinctive black cap. In winter, both males and females adopt a more subdued olive-brown color. These finches are often found in open areas with scattered trees, including fields, meadows, and gardens. They are known for their acrobatic flight and cheerful, twittering song. American Goldfinches primarily feed on seeds, especially from thistles and other composite plants. Their populations are generally stable, although they may be affected by habitat loss and changes in agricultural practices.
