Spinus tristis
The American Goldfinch, also known as the Eastern Goldfinch, is a small, vibrant songbird found across North America. During the breeding season, males display striking yellow plumage with black wings and forehead, while females have a more subdued olive-yellow coloring. These finches are highly social and often form large flocks outside of the breeding season. They are known for their undulating flight pattern and distinctive, warbling song. American Goldfinches primarily inhabit open areas, including fields, meadows, and gardens, where they forage for seeds and insects. Their preference for thistle and sunflower seeds makes them frequent visitors to backyard feeders.
