American Grebe

Podilymbus gigas

The American Grebe, also known as the Great Grebe, is a large waterbird found in freshwater lakes and marshes of North and South America. This species is known for its striking breeding plumage, which includes a black cap and a rusty-orange neck. American Grebes are expert divers and swimmers, using their lobed toes to propel themselves underwater in search of fish and aquatic invertebrates. They build floating nests among emergent vegetation and are known for their elaborate courtship displays. Despite their widespread distribution, American Grebes face threats from habitat loss and water pollution.
