American Nightjar

Siphonorhis americana

The American Nightjar, also known as the Chuck-will's-widow, is a nocturnal bird found in the southeastern United States, Mexico, and Central America. This species is known for its distinctive call, a repetitive 'chuck-will's-widow' that echoes through the night. American Nightjars have cryptic plumage, with mottled brown and gray feathers that provide excellent camouflage against tree bark and leaf litter. They are primarily insectivorous, feeding on moths, beetles, and other flying insects. These birds prefer open woodlands, scrubby areas, and forest edges for nesting and foraging.
