Ampay Tapaculo, Scytalopus whitneyi, is a tapaculo of south Peru, with breeding sites in Ayacucho and Apurímac. It lives in east-central Peru and is known from two main areas separated by about 100 km. In Ayacucho it is found on steep rocky slopes with shrubs and bunchgrass, while in Apurímac it occurs in montane forest and shrubland, including Podocarpus and Polylepis forest. It is the only member of its type. The name comes from Bosque Ampay, where the first specimens and recordings were made, and the scientific name honours Bret M. Whitney.
