Andean Avocet

Recurvirostra andina

The Andean Avocet is a striking wader with a distinctively upturned bill, black and white plumage, and long bluish legs. This species is found in high-altitude wetlands and saline lakes in the Andes mountains of South America. It forages by sweeping its bill from side to side in shallow water, feeding on aquatic invertebrates and small fish. The Andean Avocet is known for its graceful and agile movements, often seen in small flocks as they move around their breeding and wintering grounds. Although not currently considered globally threatened, the Andean Avocet faces habitat loss and disturbance due to human activities in some parts of its range.
