Colaptes rupicola

The Andean Flicker (Colaptes rupicola) is a woodpecker species found in the Andes mountains of South America. It is known for its distinctive barred plumage, with a combination of brown, black, and white markings. This medium-sized bird is often observed foraging on the ground for insects and small invertebrates, using its strong bill to probe into the soil and rotting wood. The Andean Flicker prefers open habitats such as grasslands, shrublands, and agricultural areas at high elevations. It is also known to inhabit rocky slopes and cliffs, where it excavates nesting cavities. Despite facing some habitat degradation, the Andean Flicker's population is currently stable, and it is classified as a species of Least Concern by the IUCN.
