Andean Snipe

Gallinago andina

The Andean Snipe (Gallinago andina) is a medium-sized wader found in the high-altitude grasslands and wetlands of the Andes mountains in South America. This species is well adapted to its mountainous habitat, with a cryptic plumage that provides excellent camouflage among the grasses and sedges. The Andean Snipe is known for its distinctive aerial display during the breeding season, where males perform acrobatic flights to attract females. These birds feed on invertebrates such as insects and earthworms, using their long, sensitive bills to probe the soft ground. While not much is known about their population trends, the Andean Snipe faces potential threats from habitat loss and degradation due to agricultural expansion and grazing.
