Andean Swallow

Petrochelidon fluvicola

The Andean Swallow (Petrochelidon fluvicola) is a medium-sized swallow found in the Andes mountains of South America. It has a distinctive blue-black plumage with a white underbelly and a deeply forked tail. These agile birds are often seen darting through the air as they feed on flying insects. They build their cup-shaped mud nests in colonies on vertical cliffs or under overhangs. The Andean Swallow is known for its high-pitched twittering calls and is a common sight in the mountainous regions of its range.
