Antarctic Petrel

Fulmarus glacialoides

The Antarctic Petrel (Fulmarus glacialoides) is a seabird found in the Southern Ocean, particularly around the Antarctic continent. It is a medium-sized petrel with a wingspan of about 110-130 cm. This species is well adapted to the harsh Antarctic environment, with a thick plumage and specialized salt glands to excrete excess salt. Antarctic Petrels are highly pelagic, spending most of their lives at sea, and are known for their graceful flight and agile foraging behavior. They primarily feed on fish, squid, and crustaceans. These birds are known for their haunting calls and are often seen in large flocks near fishing vessels or krill swarms.
