Antarctic Tern

Sterna vittata

The Antarctic Tern (Sterna vittata) is a medium-sized seabird found in the southern oceans. It has a white body with a black cap on its head and a distinctive red beak. Antarctic Terns are highly migratory, traveling from their breeding grounds in Antarctica to the northern oceans during the non-breeding season. They are skilled fliers and feed by plunge-diving for fish and squid. These terns nest in colonies on rocky islands and coastal cliffs, often in close proximity to other seabird species. They are known for their graceful flight and piercing calls, and are an important part of the marine ecosystem in the Southern Ocean.
