Arctic Tern

Sterna paradisaea

The Arctic Tern is a medium-sized seabird known for its remarkable long-distance migration, traveling from its Arctic breeding grounds to the Antarctic and back each year. It has a slender body, pointed wings, and a deeply forked tail. The plumage is predominantly white with a black cap and a red-orange bill. Arctic Terns are highly vocal and can be seen diving into the water to catch fish. They are skilled flyers and are known for their graceful aerial displays. These birds are highly adapted to life at sea and are often found in coastal and pelagic habitats, where they breed on rocky or sandy islands. They are known for their aggressive defense of their nesting territories and will dive-bomb intruders to protect their eggs and chicks.
