Arctic Three-toed Woodpecker

Picoides arcticus

The Arctic Three-toed Woodpecker is a medium-sized woodpecker found in the boreal forests of North America. It is known for its distinctive black and white plumage with a splash of yellow on the head of males. This species is adept at foraging for insects by pecking at the bark of coniferous trees, using its specialized three-toed feet to cling to the trunk. The Arctic Three-toed Woodpecker is often found in mature coniferous forests, where it nests in cavities excavated in dead trees. It is a solitary bird and can be identified by its drumming and tapping sounds echoing through the forest.
