Arizona Woodpecker

Leuconotopicus arizonae

The Arizona Woodpecker is a medium-sized woodpecker found in the pine-oak woodlands of southeastern Arizona and northern Mexico. It has a distinctive black and white barred back, a red crown on males, and a black crown on females. This species is known for its drumming and tapping sounds as it forages for insects and larvae in the bark of trees. The Arizona Woodpecker nests in cavities excavated in dead trees or saguaro cacti, and it may also use artificial nest boxes. While not currently considered threatened, habitat loss and degradation are potential threats to its population.
