Ascension Crake

Ascension Crake, Mundia elpenor, was a rail of Ascension Island in the South Atlantic Ocean and is now extinct. It was flightless and confined to that island, with subfossil remains recovered from deposits at the foot of vertical fumaroles. A 17th-century account records a bird that was unable to fly, moved quickly on the ground, and was seen on Ascension Island in 1656. It was later placed in the genus Mundia, a name created in 2003.
