Ashy Storm-Petrel

Hydrobates homochroa

The Ashy Storm-Petrel is a small seabird with a dark gray plumage, a white rump, and a slightly forked tail. These birds are highly pelagic, spending most of their lives at sea and returning to land only to breed. They are skilled fliers, using their long, narrow wings to glide low over the water's surface. Ashy Storm-Petrels feed on small fish and squid, often foraging in the wake of ships or near areas of upwelling. They nest in burrows on remote, rocky islands and cliffs, where they are vulnerable to predation by introduced mammals and disturbance by human activities.
