Auckland Islands snipe

Coenocorypha aucklandica

The Auckland Islands snipe (Coenocorypha aucklandica) is a small, elusive bird endemic to the subantarctic Auckland Islands of New Zealand. This cryptic, ground-dwelling species is known for its mottled brown plumage, long bill, and short tail. It is primarily nocturnal and feeds on invertebrates such as insects and worms. The Auckland Islands snipe is highly adapted to its rugged, tussock-covered habitat and is capable of rapid, zig-zag flight when flushed. Due to its limited range and vulnerability to introduced predators, the species is considered endangered.
