Auckland Shag, Leucocarbo colensoi, breeds in the Auckland Islands south of New Zealand’s South Island. It is a cormorant in the family Phalacrocoracidae and is confined to this island group. Some authorities place it in Leucocarbo, while others use Phalacrocorax. The name colensoi honours the naturalist William Colenso. It is a sedentary bird and nests in colonies, making large nests from grass, twigs and seaweed. It lays three pale blue-green eggs between November and February, and incubation lasts 26–32 days.
