Auckland Teal

Anas aucklandica (Gray, GR, 1844)

Anatidae — Ducks, Geese, Swans

Auckland Teal, Anas aucklandica, is a duck in the Anatidae family and the Anseriformes order. It breeds in the Auckland Islands south of New Zealand, where it is confined to islands without introduced predators, including Adams Island, Enderby Island and Disappointment Island, plus a few smaller islands. Earlier records from North East Island in the Snares group probably involved a wandering bird. It lives in several island habitats, such as tussock fields, megaherb shrubland and coastal waters, and it is territorial, usually active at dusk and night, and flightless.
