Augur Buzzard

Buteo augur (Rüppell, 1836)

Augur Buzzard, Buteo augur, is a bird of prey found in montane Ethiopia and northern Somalia south to Zimbabwe, and also from central Angola to central Namibia. It is a resident species across this range. Adults are recognised by a blackish back, a whitish underside and an orange-red tail. Young birds are usually brown, and a dark form is also known. It lives in mountain country, with nearby savannah and grassland, and is recorded at about 2,000 m, reaching 5,000 m.
