Australasian darter

Anhinga rufa

The Australasian darter is a large, snake-necked bird found in the wetlands and waterways of Australia, New Guinea, and nearby islands. With its long, slender neck and sharp, pointed bill, it is well-adapted for catching fish underwater. The plumage of the Australasian darter is predominantly black with white streaks on the neck and chest. It is a solitary and stealthy hunter, often perching on branches overhanging the water before diving in to catch its prey. This species is known for its distinctive 'drying' behavior, where it spreads its wings to dry them after swimming. The Australasian darter is a fascinating and unique bird that plays an important role in the aquatic ecosystems it inhabits.
