Australasian Grebe

Tachybaptus novaehollandiae

The Australasian Grebe, also known as the Tachybaptus novaehollandiae, is a small waterbird found in Australia, New Zealand, and nearby islands. It is characterized by its compact body, slender neck, and distinctive black cap during breeding season. This species is often found in freshwater lakes, ponds, and marshes, where it feeds on aquatic invertebrates and small fish. The Australasian Grebe is a skilled diver and can remain submerged for extended periods. It builds floating nests among reeds and vegetation, laying a clutch of eggs that are incubated by both parents. While not currently considered threatened, habitat loss and degradation pose potential risks to its population.
