Australian Painted-Snipe

Rostratula australis

The Australian Painted-Snipe is a striking and elusive wader found in Australia and parts of New Guinea. It is known for its unique breeding behavior, where the female is more brightly colored than the male and takes the lead in courtship and nesting. This species is highly adapted to its wetland habitat, with a long, slender bill for probing in mud and shallow water for invertebrates. The Australian Painted-Snipe is classified as a near-threatened species due to habitat loss and degradation of its wetland habitats.
