Australian Pelican

Poliocephalus poliocephalus

The Australian Pelican, scientifically known as Poliocephalus poliocephalus, is a large waterbird found in Australia, New Guinea, and parts of Indonesia. With its distinctive long bill and large throat pouch, it is well adapted for its predominantly aquatic lifestyle. These birds are often seen gliding gracefully over water bodies or resting in large flocks. They are opportunistic feeders, consuming a variety of fish, crustaceans, and other aquatic organisms. Australian Pelicans are known for their spectacular aerial displays during courtship. Their nesting colonies are typically found on islands or secluded shores, where they build shallow scrape nests. These pelicans are not considered threatened and are protected under Australian law.
